Reflexology for Babies and Children

Babies & ChildrenTouch is an essential ingredient in our lives from babies through to the elderly, we all need it. Firm pressure has been proven to be relaxing and calming. When the body is relaxed, it is able to restore itself and heal. Touch regulates the heart rate and reduces levels of stress within the body. It also boosts the immune system helping us to fight off illness and disease and stimulates the release of serotonin, a hormone that makes us feel good.

Touch has been found to help babies gain weight and sleep better, decrease pain and improve wound healing. Touch helps relieve anxiety and stress in children so that they are better able to cope. Even children experience the stress of changes to their environment such as going to nursery school, having a new carer, the arrival of a sibling, mom going back to work. Touch helps children to feel nurtured and loved and has physical as well as psychological benefits.

Reflexology is a wonderful therapy to use on children. Babies and children respond very well and quickly as they have not yet built up congestions and stress in their bodies. Only gentle pressure should be applied, it should be a nice experience for them. Regular treatment will help maintain good health and prevent illness from occurring. It is a great way for parents to bond and have special time with their child.

TBabies & Childrenips for giving a treatment:

  • Pick a time of the day that is good for both you and your baby, it must be a pleasant experience so don’t force it. If they aren’t in the mood then leave it
  • and try again later. Bedtime is not necessarily the best time of day as baby may be over-stimulated and tired.
  • Use very gentle pressure and let your baby guide you.
  • They will naturally curl their toes, which is one of their reflexes. You can tickle them on the top of their foot to open the toes and the more you treat them the more used to it they get and they actually start opening the toes naturally.
  • Don’t hold on to their feet too tightly, they will kick their legs and you will lose their foot, just go with the flow and enjoy it.
  • Don’t be afraid to play with them while you treat them if you see them wanting to roll over or crawl off. Give them a toy to keep their attention and keep them on their backs. Pull funny faces and make funny noises, whatever works.
